An Indian 'Nihang,' or a man whose ancestors belonged to Sikh warrior clan, stands on top of two running horses as he shows his riding skills during Mohalla in Amritsar, India, Nov. 14.

Each year members of various major Nihang groups display their martial arts and horse riding skills during the Mohalla procession, the day after Diwali in Amritsar, India. The Sikh celebration of the return of the sixth Guru Hargobind from detention in the Gwalior Fort, known as Bandi Chhorh Divas, marks the day Guru Hargobind had agreed to his release on the condition that the other fifty-two vassal kings who were detainees would also be released.

Two woman hug as community members pay respects to the six victims in the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, at the Oak Creek High School on Aug. 10, in Oak Creek Wisconsin. Suspected gunman, 40-year-old Wade Michael Page, allegedly killed six people at the temple on August 5 and then killed himself at the scene. He was an army veteran and reportedly a former member of a white supremacist heavy metal band. Three others were critically wounded in the attack.

A woman weeps as mourners attend the funeral and memorial service for the six victims of the Sikh temple of Wisconsin mass shooting in Oak Creek, Wis., on Aug 10. The public service was held in the Oak Creek High School. Three other people were wounded in the shooting last Sunday at the temple. Wade Michael Page, 40, killed five men and one woman, and injured two other men. Authorities say Page then ambushed the first police officer who responded, shooting him nine times and leaving him in critical condition. A second officer then shot Page in the stomach, and Page took his own life with a shot to the head.

Becky Bratu, NBC News -- As prayer, music and chanting filled the building, hundreds streamed into an Oak Creek, Wis., gymnasium Friday morning to pay their final respects to the woman and five men killed when a gunman opened fire at a Sikh temple in the community last weekend.

Non-Sikhs wearing kerchiefs on their heads and Sikhs alike marched together in neat rows, with some of them stopping at times to embrace one another and exchange a few words. A priest spoke and recited prayers in the native Indian Punjabi.

"Today we mourn with you, we pray with you and we support you,” Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker told those gathered.

Vigil remembers victims of shooting at Oak Creek Sikh temple

John Gress / Reuters

Sikhs attend a vigil in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on August 7, 2012 following the killings of six worshippers at a Sikh temple.

The Associated Press reports — Hundreds of people gathered in southeastern Wisconsin Tuesday night to remember the six Sikh worshippers who were fatally shot at their temple on Sunday.

Attendees held candles and prayed for the victims, remembering them as peaceful individuals dedicated to their families and faith.

Police Chief John Edwards told the crowd that such incidents often prompt anger and calls for revenge, but he says he was struck by the peaceful reaction of the Sikh community.

Indian Sikh devotees pay their respects at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, on Aug. 6.

The shootings at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin have highlighted how little is known about the religion in America, so it seemed like a good time to take a look at their holiest shrine, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India.
By NBC News Staff: American Sikhs said they have often been singled out for harassment, and occasionally violent attack, since the September 11, 2001 attacks because of their colorful turbans and beards.
The 2001 attacks were carried out by Muslims linked to the al-Qaida militant group led by Osama bin Laden. Sikhs are not Muslim but many Americans do not know the difference, members of the Sikh community said.
The Sikh faith is the fifth-largest in the world, with more than 30 million followers. It includes belief in one God and that the goal of life is to lead an exemplary existence. Full Story

A temple committee member, Ven Boba Ri, told the Journal-Sentinel that people inside the temple described the shooter as a white male in his 30s.

"We have no idea," he said of the motive. "It's pretty much a hate crime. It's not an insider."

Ri told the Journal-Sentinel the gunman walked up to a priest who was standing outside the temple and shot him. Then he went inside and started shooting.

Great to see the Sikhs reviving this great form of martial arts. Unless we continue to teach kids the Gatka, this great art form will soon vanish from this planet.
