Silvio Berlusconi takes his seat for crucial confidence vote

Update 10:23 a.m. ET: Berlusconi survived the vote.

msnbc.com news services report from ROME:

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi faces a confidence vote in parliament Friday that is seen as the most serious threat to his political survival since the billionaire media baron was swept into power nearly two decades ago.

With an electorate weary of the scandals engulfing the premier and worried about Italy's economy, Berlusconi is facing repeated calls for his resignation from his political rivals, labor unions and parts of the business community that once considered him their savior. Continue reading.

The fact that this creep survives explains why Italy ranks with Greece and Portugal as egocentric nations unable to face reality. Germany should simply declare that they will take over all the financial matters involving Europe, and ask France to assist. Italy no longer qualifies, or is deserving, a …

Buddy, can you spare a billion? French banks downgraded

    By Rich Shulman

Do you think it's a cheap shot to make a visual joke about the situation at Societe Generale and other euro zone banks?

Meanwhile, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi (below) seems to be feeling the pain as Italy passes its austerity plan.

A homeless man begs outside a branch of French bank Societe Generale, Paris, Sept. 14. The fallout from the Eurozone crisis deepened as Moody's credit ratings agency announced it was downgrading French banks Societe Generale and Credit Agricole over their exposure to Greek debt. Moody's downgraded the long-term debt and deposit ratings of Credit Agricole from Aa1 to Aa2 and Societe Generale's from Aa2 to Aa3, against the backdrop of renewed fears that Greece is headed for a debt default. The agency left the rating of the country's biggest bank, BNP Paribas, unchanged for now.

Netanyahu meets Berlusconi to rally opposition to Palestinian plans

    The AP reports from ROME:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in Italy to rally opposition to Palestinian plans to have the U.N. recognize a Palestinian state in September.

Italy is one of Israel's closest friends in Europe, and last month Berlusconi said Italy would only recognize a Palestinian unity government that renounces terrorism and recognizes Israel's right to exist. Read the full story.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi holds his face in his hand at the Villa Madama in Rome as he arrives for a meeting with Slovenia's President Danilo Turk on Jan.18. Allegations that Berlusconi hooked up with prostitutes he kept in rent-free luxury apartments have weakened the government and damaged the country's image abroad, experts say. Italian magistrates last week announced an enquiry into the relationship between Berlusconi and an underage girl, known as Ruby, as the prime minister was still reeling from a court ruling partially stripping him of political immunity.
