Slovenian family becomes attached to brown bear cub

Brown bear (Ursus arctos) cub Medo plays with the Logar family dog in Podvrh village, central Slovenia June 1. The Slovenian Logar family has adopted the three-and-half-month-old bear cub that strolled into their yard about 30 days ago. Although the family would like to prepare a fenced enclosure for it, veterinary authorities would prefer to move it into a shelter for wild animals.

Grom, a 70-year old Slovenian craftsman has drilled holes in Easter eggshells for the last 18 years to make ornaments on them. He drills an approximate number of 2500 to 3500 holes to make a single special Easter eggshell for which he spends usually one week. Grom is the only artist making craftworks on eggshells by drilling this number of holes.

Actors dressed as devils perform during the "gathering of the devils" ahead of Saint Nicholas Day in Podkoren, Slovenia, Dec. 1, 2010. On Saint Nicholas Day, a performer representing the saint goes around villages giving out presents to children, and he is usually surrounded by performers representing devils. This group of actors from Italy, Austria and Slovenia are performing in Podkoren for the second consecutive year.

Devils gather in Slovenia for the holiday season

    By Robert Hood

This time of year always brings warm, deep memories from my childhood. I wonder how the children of Podkoren, Slovenia will remember the holidays.
