    Aftermath of the October snowstorm

It was surreal to see the blizzard conditions that took over New York City and much of the East Coast on Saturday, as well as the resulting damage from the heavy snow on trees that had not yet lost their leaves. New York City is estimating it will lose 1,000 trees. Over 1 million customers throughout the Northeast are still without power, as crews continue to struggle to get them back on the grid. For thousands of children in school, the storm brought them their first snow day of the season.

I have to laugh at the first pic of the woman walking her dog..talk about an accident waiting to happen. She is walking the dog and talking on her cell phone even as she is absently stepping over a lot of debris. Was walking in the park REALLY that imperative?

Workers use elevator to remove snow from University of Iowa building

    By Jim Seida

I've never seen snow transported via elevator before.  The images coming out of this storm are impressive.  You can see our slideshow of the storm here.  Msnbc.com users have been sending us their images from the storm, see those here, and upload your own images of the storm here.  And here's one more image you shouldn't miss.

University of Iowa evironmental systems mechanic Dennis Schintler (L) and electrician Steve Denneny use an elevator to carry out some of the snow that had blown into the Carver Biomedical Reseach Building's air supply intake Feb. 2, in Iowa City, Iowa. The snow had blown ind during a massive storm and restricted the building's intake. Almost 20 inches of snow fell in parts of the Midwest as the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for southeastern Iowa and much of Illinois. Snow is forecast to continue today and move east toward New England and the East Coast.

In my day, every flag flying on a flagpole had a keeper who was responsible for putting it up in the morning and taking it down in the evening (unless specifically illuminated), but especially when rain or other bad weather was coming. To leave a flag up at night or in a storm was seen as being disr …

Trash piles up on NYC streets following snowstorm

    Justin Lane / EPA

A man walks past a large pile of garbage in New York on Monday, Jan. 3. After a large snowstorm crippled the city last week, the New York City Department of Sanitation has been unable to collect garbage leading to large uncollected piles of waste. Garbage collection resumed today, but officials estimated it would take up to four days to catch up.

Sanitation officials in NYC begin clearing up the mountains of trash that have grown on the city sidewalks since last week's blizzard. Meanwhile, a 26-year-old is recovering after piled trash saved him as he jumped from a ninth floor window.
