Door for Koreas dialogue 'still open'

    By Elena Grothe

    AP reports:

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea's president vowed Monday not to let North Korea "covet even an inch of our territory." But he also opened the door to possible peace talks, saying North Korean disarmament could lead to South Korean economic aid.

Lee Myung-bak, addressing the country in a New Year's speech, said the Nov. 23 shelling of Yeonpyeong Island, which killed four and has spiked fears of war, was a transformational event. Seoul, he said, would treat it as the United States did the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and "overhaul our defense posture."

North Korean soldiers (back) and US soldiers of the United Nations Command Security Battalion stand guard during a ceremony on the 57th anniversary of the signing of the cease-fire agreement of the Korean War at the Military Demarcation Line in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in the border village Panmunjom, South Korea, 27 July 2010.

    Meeting at the DMZ

I wonder what the interaction was like between the soldiers, if they had much chance to speak. Also, I wonder how the North Korean soldiers perceived the American soldiers, given what I understand to be their limited exposure to foreign tourists and media.

your on to something earl. we should send the biggest meanest lookin soldiers we have every year just to stand there. 7ft minimum. sense North Korea has limited foreign exposure, they'll think all Americans are that size :D

So, if most Afgh soldiers are foreigners, mercenaries, why are not own Afgh people fightin' to free them-selves from the Taliban? I don't follow why, they (mercenaries) and US fightin' to free them (Afgh people) from this terrorist, (fanatic Islamic)... oh! I get it now: they want to blow US in pie …

U.S. and Canadian soldiers lounge and swim at a pool at Camp Nathan Smith in Kandahar city on Wednesday, June 9. NATO, US and Afghan soldiers are preparing their biggest offensive yet against the Taliban in Kandahar province, with total foreign troop numbers set to peak at 150,000 by August..

    A well-deserved break

We saw a lot of these images from Saddam's palaces that U.S. troops took over following the fall of Baghdad. But this is my first chance to see soldiers getting a fun pool break in Afghanistan.
