Commuters travel in a carriage on a London Underground train on March 5, in London, England. London's underground rail system, commonly called the tube, is the oldest of its kind in the world dating back to 1890. It carries approximately a quarter of a million people around its network every day along its 249 miles of track and 270 stations. The network has undergone several years of upgrade work and refurbishment in preparation for the Olympic Games which take place this summer. During this time the tube is expected to carry millions of visitors to and from the Olympic Parks.

Portland "gladiators" battle in chariot bike wars

    Rick Bowmer / AP

Dan Oviatt, known as "Captain America," rides his mini bike during a three-day Mini Bike Winter Olympics on Sunday, Feb.19, in Portland, Ore. "Zoobombers" are known for riding pint-sized kids' bikes at breakneck speed down steep streets in Portland. (

Chariot riders battle in a "Ben Hur"-like chariot race at Chariot Wars during a three-day Mini Bike Winter Olympics Saturday, Feb.18, in Portland, Ore. Armed, variously, with all manner of foam-padded apparatus, at least five teams did battle on Saturday under gray skies for the pleasure of hoisting a three-foot-tall, homemade skull-bearing piece of welded junk, called the "Ben Hurt" trophy.

Chariot rider Jon Penfold drinks from the "Ben Hurt" trophy following the "Ben Hur"-like chariot race at Chariot Wars during a three-day Mini Bike Winter Olympics Saturday, Feb. 1, in Portland, Ore. Armed, variously, with all manner of foam-padded apparatus, at least five teams did battle on Saturday under gray skies for the pleasure of hoisting a three-foot-tall, homemade skull-bearing piece of welded junk, called the "Ben Hurt" trophy.

     From AP:

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Looking like punk gladiators, teams of young adults on junk bikes pulling chariots made of junk parts frenetically chased each other around a makeshift arena, slamming each other and swinging away with foam clubs.

Spectators tossed beer cans, flour and smoke grenades. Firecrackers popped and obscenities flew during the battle, called the "Ben Hurt Chariot Wars."

And then, toward sundown, the grown-ups arrived. Seven police cars pulled up and told all 400 or so people they had to leave because they were trespassing on railroad property. They complied. But the contest was over anyway.

    Reindeer racing in Finland

    Kimmo Brandt / EPA

Reindeers and their jockeys during the Reindeer Cup Championship Drives 2011 in Inari, Lapland, northern Finland, on March 19 There are 51 Reindeer Herding Cooperatives in Finland of which 20 took part in the 2011 Cup. When autumn arrives reindeers are separated. Some go to the slaughterhouse, other are kept for breeding and a few males are neutered and trained as work reindeers, mainly for pulling sledges and racing. Once that has been done, local breeder cooperatives like to find out who owns the fastest and strongest reindeer. With the onset of spring, the cooperatives hold meetings to review the events of the past year.

    Extreme Viking sledding in Germany

Pakistani wrestlers or "Pahalwans", are pictured in action during a training session at a wrestling pit in Lahore, Pakistan on October 9, 2010. Kushti, an Indo-Pakistani form of wrestling, is several thousand years old and is a national sport in Pakistan. In ancient times it was used for combat and self-defense. Pakistani wrestlers Azhar Hussain and Muhammad Inam have won gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth games in Delhi, India in the 55kg and 84kg freestyle disciplines. The last time Pakistan won a wrestling gold at the Commonwealth games was in 1970 at Edinburugh, Scotland.

Carl de Souza did a fantastic job with his photo essay showing the ancient sport of Kushti wrestling. The first image really drew me in, the photos made me feel like I was there - in the dirt - with them. See more images from Pakistan.
