Angry students toss furniture from balconies after freshman suicide in the Philippines

Protesters throw a bench from a balcony following an apparent suicide by a college freshman at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Manila on March 18.

Protesting students at the Polytechnic University of Philippines created a bonfire of furniture to mourn a freshman who apparently committed suicide last week after she was forced to suspend her studies because of her inability to pay her tuition. According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, classes were canceled on Monday to mourn 16-year-old Kristel Tejada and student organizations vowed to continue protests against school policies on tuition fees.

Burning furniture will not pay her bill. I get why the kids are upset and I also get the group mentality that goes with these kinds of protests, but vandalizing property helps nothing.

Undocumented UCLA students gather at church for graduation ceremony

    Jonathan Alcorn / Reuters

Undocumented UCLA students stand in line at a graduation ceremony for UCLA "Dreamers", or Dream Act students, at a church near the campus in Los Angeles on Friday. Undocumented youths who came to the United States as children reacted with joy to an Obama administration rule change on Friday that could spare them deportation, although opponents slammed it as amnesty.

Miranda Leitsinger reports that some illegal immigrants reacted with joy, and others with skepticism, to the Obama administration's announcement that it would no longer seek the deportation of most undocumented youth:

The announcement represented a major policy shift, and its political implications will be significant.

Cesar Vargas, who started DRM Capitol Group, LLC, to advocate for people in his position -- he illegally entered the country from Mexico when he was 5 years old -- welcomed Obama’s announcement: “We’re speechless.”

“A lot of the work that dreamers have been doing … it’s showing fruit, so we’re a little bit shocked, a little surprised and definitely excited,” said Vargas, 28.

Homecoming queen with Down syndrome inspires her classmates in Missouri

Erik M. Lunsford / St. Louis Post-Dispatch via AP

Senior Sara Marshall hugs Barbara Behlmann during lunch on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Hazelwood West High School in Hazelwood, Mo. Behlmann is a homecoming queen, a cheerleader and clearly one of the most popular students at Hazelwood West High School in suburban St. Louis. She also has Down syndrome. But she was raised in a home where her parents never put limits on her, and she has taken that message to heart as she prepares to graduate Saturday.

Senior Barbara Behlmann walks to class following lunch on Thursday.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch tells the story of student Barbara Behlmann, a popular graduating senior at Hazelwood West High who has Down Syndrome:

Early on, the Behlmanns decided they would teach their daughter to do more than just survive.

"We never put limits on Barbara. We never said 'You can't do this,' or 'You're not able to do this,'" Karen Behlmann said. "It was whatever she wanted to do, then we were going to do it — whatever it took."

Speech and language therapies, at day care, school and home were constant throughout the rest of her childhood, they say. Chatter with a sister, another girl the Behlmanns adopted, helped too.

Along the way, Barbara's personality became clear — a happy, outgoing girl with no fear.

That's how her fellow cheerleaders at Hazelwood West describe her.

Quebec moves to restore order as striking students clash with police

A student protester in a panda suit confronts a policeman in downtown Montreal on May 17, 2012. The students are striking over a planned tuition hike of 82 percent or over $1,700 as part of the government's efforts to rein in a budget deficit.

Reuters reports — Quebec's government moved late on Wednesday to end a sometimes violent 14-week mass student strike in the Canadian province that officials fear could harm the economy and deter tourists.

    Policemen aim a teargas gun.

Premier Jean Charest said his government would shortly unveil legislation to ensure students could freely attend classes, although he did not give details. He did not address speculation that the bill would allow strikers to be fined.

"It is time calm was restored ... the current situation has gone on for too long," Charest said in a late-night statement to reporters.

Some 155,000 people - more than a third of the college and university students in the predominantly French-speaking province - are striking to protest against a steep rise in what are some of the lowest tuition fees in north America. Read the full story.

Chilean students throw rocks, get blasted by water cannons while protesting education system

    Eliseo Fernandez / Reuters

Students throw stones towards riot police during a protest against the government in Valparaiso city, about 121 km (75 miles) northwest of Santiago, May 12. Thousands of students marched through the streets on Thursday to demand for changes in the public state education system.

The Santiago Times says: Unlike many other Latin American countries, Chile has one of the most privately-funded higher education systems in the world. Chilean university fees are among the world’s highest as compared to per capita gross domestic product (GDP).

    Victor Ruiz Caballero / Reuters

International estimates for Chile’s per capita GDP in 2010 are between US$11,800 and US$11,900, according to the International Monetary Fund and the CIA World Factbook, respectively.

    Victor Ruiz Caballero / Reuters

According to Times Higher Education, the fees for a public regional university in Chile are about US$3,200. The prestigious public school Universidad de Chile has fees of around US$8,000 and large private universities can go as high as US$9,600.

    Roberto Candia / AP

“Chile is a very poor country, and it’s time for the government to start helping out its students financially,” José Manuel Morales, university senator at Universidad de Chile, told The Santiago Times. “The main goal of this demonstration is to get the state to take charge of higher education.”
