No GPS! Aspiring London taxi drivers memorize a tangle of streets

Carl Court / AFP - Getty Images

A student ponders while drawing routes on a map of London in a test center in north London. All London black cab drivers are required to pass the Knowledge in order to be issued with a Hackney Carriage Licence. On average, between three and four years are needed to acquire this knowledge. A recent scientific study has shown that the area of the brain responsible for spatial memory, the hippocampus was significantly larger in taxi drivers. Aboard London taxis, drivers do not use GPS, they know the city by heart, preferring to rely on their memory rather than on modern technologies.

Mumbai taxi drivers bid farewell to an icon of the road

    Vivek Prakash / Reuters

Drivers and mechanics of Premier Padmini taxis gather together at a workshop in Mumbai, India on October 4, 2012. The Premier Padmini was manufactured in India by Premier Automobiles from 1964 to 2000 and is based on the design of Fiat's 1100-series cars from the 1960s. The vehicle quickly became the iconic workhorse in Mumbai's fleet of black and yellow taxis until economic liberalisation in the 1990s allowed different makes and models to be produced in India.

A driver demonstrates the use of a manually operated fare meter on October 12, 2012.

The Premier Padmini, the iconic workhorse in Mumbai's fleet of black and yellow cabs for nearly 50 years, faces an imminent demise. With the introduction of a government order banning taxis over 25 years old, the number of Padminis has begun to dwindle and, in a few years, they will be gone from the Indian city's streets altogether.

Reuters photographer Vivek Prakash, once a taxi driver himself (though in the relatively sedate streets of Brisbane, Australia), set out to pay an affectionate tribute to the car he calls "the grand old dame of Mumbai's streets":

Power steering? Who needs it. Nothing a bit of elbow grease can’t fix. Air conditioning? Forget about it! You live in a sultry humid city, you should learn to love it. Electric windows? I don’t think so, use the handle to roll it down. Suspension? What suspension? Just remember you’ll feel every little bump on your way home tonight.

Here in Mumbai we love to hate the Padmini. They are uncomfortable, hot, steamy, and funny smelling. But when they’re gone, we’ll miss them.

Updated at 8:52 a.m. ET: LONDON -- Ecuador granted asylum to Julian Assange on Thursday, expressing fury at a threat by Britain to seize the WikiLeaks founder at its London embassy.

NBC News wire services report — Protesters chanting slogans in support of Julian Assange tussled with police outside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London on Thursday after Britain said it might enter the building to detain the WikiLeaks founder holed up inside.

A Reuters reporter saw at least three protesters being dragged away by police as the crowd shouted: "You are trying to start a war with Ecuador." About 20 officers were outside the embassy trying to push away the crowd of about 15 supporters. Read the full story.

I'm disappointed the Brits are so anal over this. No one likes their dirty laundry shown to the public but the best cure for that is to have no dirty laundry in the first place. Face it Limy's, your just a bunch of scorned little boys..

Taxi and truck drivers stop traffic while protesting in Italy

    Reuters

A woman walks in front of taxis parked to protest against the government's deregulation plans, in downtown Bologna January 23, 2012. Truckers blocked roads throughout Italy and taxi drivers resumed a strike on Monday as opposition mounted to fuel tax rises and economic reforms aimed at opening up competition in protected sectors including transport and pharmacies.

A line of trucks block a ringroad around Turin Italy, as the Alps are seen in background, Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. Truck drivers in Italy angered by an increase in gas prices introduced as part of the government's austerity measures have blocked highways near Milan in the north and Naples in the south. Also protesting Monday were taxi drivers who went on strike across Italy over plans to issue more taxi licenses. The measure is part of a liberalization package approved last week by the government as it seeks to convince investors it has a strategy to deal with its debts. Truck drivers brought their protest to the mainland after bringing goods transport to a near halt in Sicily last week.

Reuters reports that other labor groups, including railway workers and lawyers, may strike also:

Speaking on RAI state radio, Interior Minister Annamaria Cancellieri said authorities were following the protests "with close attention".

"We cannot rule out this discontent leading to protests of a different kind," she said, in an apparent concern that the situation could get out of control.

Wow, this is definitely a wee bit more harsh than a citation and a fine. I would think law enforcement would allow the offenders to keep their cars for personal transportation which would include driving to a legal job.

Afghan bride Zahara, 24, is held by groom Gulam Ali as they leave for their wedding ceremony in a taxi on Oct. 14, in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. At local beauty salons, behind drawn curtains, isolated from the males, Afghan women spend hours getting ready for engagement parties and weddings. In accordance with Afghan culture the men are required to be segregated from the women with the exception of the bride and groom.

Photographer Paula Bronstein captured in this image what I perceive to be a subtle moment that suggests the challenges that many women still face in the conservative Afghan culture despite the end of Taliban rule.
