Blind runner's despair turns to joy at Paralympics

By David R Arnott, NBC News

Blind Brazilian runner Terezinha Guilhermina and her guide Guilherme Soares de Santana react after crossing the finish line to win the Women's 100m T11 final at the Paralympic Games in London on Wednesday night.

Blind or partially-sighted athletes are permitted to use a guide runner in Paralympic races, but the guide is never permitted to cross the finish line before the blind runner. At the 2012 Games, guides became eligible for medals for the first time.

24 hours earlier Guilhermina's bid for 400m glory was derailed when Soares de Santana tripped on the home straight, a moment captured in a series of heartbreaking images published on PhotoBlog.

But their despair was replaced by joy as Guilhermina took the 100m gold in a world record time of 12.01 seconds, adding to the 200m title she won on Sunday.

Did every runner have a guide? How does the guide work with the runner? Are they in contact? Did the two trip each other? Did they get up and finish the race? Are there alternatives to guides? It would be OK with me for athletes to use their guide dogs in the race.

Thursday night, after he won gold in the men's 200 meter final, he grabbed a camera and started taking pictures. Usain Bolt is simply phenomenal. He runs a good race, even after a year of injury. Then has the energy (and good humour) to pose for the crowd and enjoy his victory in a fun way. And it's quite incredible that Jamaica took the top three spots in this 200 metres. Jamaica – population half that of  …

Photo finish race to be decided by coin toss or run-off

USA Track & Field via AP

This Saturday, June 23, 2012, photo provided by USA Track & Field shows the third-place finish of the women's 100-meter final from a photo-finish camera, shot at 3,000-frames-per-second, during the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore. Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh, in foreground, finished in a dead heat for the last U.S. spot in the 100 to the London Games, each leaning across the finish line in 11.068 seconds. The first torso to cross the finish line is what establishes a winner.

    Mike Blake / Reuters

Allyson Felix puts her arm around Jeneba Tarmoh after the two runners tied for third place in the women's 100m race at the U.S. Olympic athletics trials in Eugene, Oregon, June 23.

NBC Olympics reports: Nearly 24 hours of confusion over how the dead heat between Allyson Felixand Janeba Tarmoh for the third and final spot on the Olympic team in the women’s 100m will come down to either a coin flip or a run-off.

According to these new procedures, which will be applied to all instances of breaking a tie for the final slot in a running event in which a national team or Olympic team slot is at stake, the tie will be broken by the following protocol:

The athletes involved will be given the option to determine the tie-breaker via coin toss or by run-off.

If the athletes disagree on the tie-breaker, the tie will be broken by a run-off.

If both athletes refuse to declare a preference between the coin toss or the run-off, the tie will be broken by a coin toss.

Ashton Eaton finishes decathlon with new world record at US Olympic Track and Field Trials

    Mike Blake / Reuters

U.S. decathlete Ashton Eaton celebrates as he clears 5.30 meters in the decathlon pole vault at the U.S. Olympic Athletics Trials in Eugene, Ore., June 23.

In the decathlon, Ashton Eaton was ahead of a world-record pace for two events. His shot put throw of 46 feet, 7 3/4 inches slowed him down, but he still led two-time world champion Trey Hardee by 205 points with six events to go.

Eaton, an Oregon native, looked very much at home in the steady rain that swamped Hayward Field for the first of this 10-day event, during which up to 120 spots on the U.S. Olympic team will be awarded.

By David R Arnott, NBC News

Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius picked up a silver medal in the men's 4x400-meter relay at the world championships in South Korea on Sept. 2, earning great acclaim and adding to the debate over whether his running blades offer him an advantage over able-bodied athletes.

Visiting London to promote next year's Paralympic Games, Pistorius called an abrupt end to an interview with BBC Radio on Tuesday after rejecting a suggestion he could be considered "an inconvenient embarrassment to the South African authorities and IAAF". Listen to the interview.
