This kind of image always intrigues me: a minor drama, its characters thrown together for a few moments, and by chance a photographer there to capture the scene. And as someone who rides a bike in London every day, I have something of a personal interest in this one too.

A traffic policeman gestures to a car as he directs traffic along a flooded street in Nonthaburi province on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, on October 12.

Traffic keeps flowing in flooded outskirts of Bangkok

    The AP reports from BANGKOK:

Thailand is counting the multibillion dollar cost of nationwide flooding that has killed nearly 270 people and may yet cause more havoc as waters threaten to engulf the country's capital.

A preliminary estimate by the central bank shows economic losses from flooding that began in late July range from baht 60 billion to baht 80 billion ($1.9 billion to $2.6 billion).

That figure doesn't include damages to assets or reconstruction costs and is expected to rise as the flood waters surge toward Bangkok, a city of about 10 million people. Some of its outlying areas are already under water. Continue reading.

Amphibious car owners gather for a "family picture" on Lake Neuchatel on August 18.

    AFP reports:

The owners of more than 50 amphibious vehicles brought their World War II-era military transporters, jeeps and vintage-style cars to Lake Neuchatel in Switzerland on Thursday for their annual European gathering. Fitted with colorful umbrellas and decorated with flags, what looked like a motley crew of vehicles carrying families including babies and dogs drove off the port and glided smoothly into the water.

typical ignorance and lack of respect driven by greed. We in the West sometimes expect a higher degree of spiritual development in the land of Lao Tse, Confucious and Kwai Chang Kane. But, no. The love of the power of money can easily displace compassion, empathy and common sense. In any culture.
