    Boat-load of coffins heads for Philippines disaster zone

    The United Nations has appealed for $65 million in emergency aid for millions of victims of Typhoon Bopha in the southern Philippines, where at least 714 people were killed as muddy floodwaters washed out entire villages.

    AFP – Getty Images reports — Hundreds of thousands of survivors of a deadly typhoon crammed into packed shelters on Dec. 7, braving the stench of corpses as the government vowed action to prevent storm disasters. Typhoon Bopha whipped the southern Philippines on Dec. 4, leaving at least 546 people dead and hundreds more missing in the deadliest natural disaster this year in a country regularly hit with quakes, floods and volcanic eruptions.

    Typhoon Bopha is weakening but the damage in the Philippines is mounting. The death toll has reached 420 and hundreds remain missing. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

    AP reports: Rescuers were digging through mud and debris Friday to retrieve more bodies strewn across a farming valley in the southern Philippines by a powerful typhoon. The death toll from the storm has surpassed 500, with more than 400 people missing.

    More than 310,000 people have lost their homes since Typhoon Bopha struck Tuesday and are crowded inside evacuation centers or staying with their relatives, relying on food and emergency supplies being rushed in by government agencies and aid groups. Full story.

    Reuters reports: MANILA, Philippines -- The death toll from the Philippines' strongest typhoon this year rose on Wednesday to around 230, with hundreds missing in landslides and floodwaters, as the storm continued its destructive path across the island nation.

    Typhoon Bopha, with central winds of 75 mph and gusts of up to 93 mph, battered beach resorts and dive spots in northern Palawan on Wednesday, but there was little damage as the storm began to weaken.

    Hardest hit were the coastal, farming and mining towns in the southern Mindanao region, where Bopha made landfall on Tuesday, destroying homes, causing landslides and flash flooding and killing at least 230 people. Continue reading...

    The strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year pounded the southern island of Mindanao on Tuesday and about 40 people were dead or missing, media said, after the storm destroyed homes and brought down power and communication lines.

    Typhoon Bopha made landfall at dawn, uprooting trees and tearing off roofs. The Weather Channel said the storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph and was the equivalent of a category five hurricane.

    About 40 people were killed or missing in flash floods and landslides near a mining area on Mindanao, ABS-CBN television reported, saying waters and soil had swept through an army post. Continue reading.

    Reuters reports — A typhoon with winds of up to 106 mph buffeted South Korea's west coast on Tuesday, killing five people at sea and leaving 10 missing when two Chinese fishing vessels capsized.

    Typhoon Bolaven barreled up the coast before making landfall in already flood-ravaged North Korea as the impoverished country struggles to feed its 24 million people.

    Coast guard rescuers pulled 18 surviving fishermen from the Chinese vessels that capsized off the southern island of Jeju and found five bodies, the emergency services said. Read the full story.

    Reuters reports — Typhoon Haikui struck China on Wednesday, packing winds of up to 68 mph, prompting officials to evacuate nearly 2 million people and grounding hundreds of flights to and from Shanghai and other cities.

    More than 1.5 million people in the eastern province of Zhejiang and 252,000 residents of outlying parts of Shanghai were evacuated after Haikui landed early in the morning, causing flooding and stranding hundreds of people, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Continue reading.

    Aquatic water farms are booming in China. Jokes aside, I feel sorry for anyone being displaced by disaster especially people that have so little to begin with. Lets pray the rains stop in Asia and starts in the mid-west and southern states..
