After a tornado disrupted their lives, high school students go to prom

    As the AP reported:

TRENTON, Ga. — The "Cinderella dress" Delana Blevins had so looked forward to wearing to prom just needed a few alterations when the tornadoes ripped through northwest Georgia late last month, blowing it away along with the rest of the tailoring shop. All she found in the rubble was a scrap of beading from the bodice.

In a May 6, 2011 photo, Marcella Lackey, 18, left, takes a look at handbags as she and her friends, Ashley Thompson, 18, holding her 2-year-old sister Maddie Blevins, and 16-year-old Kristin Thompson, right, finish 'shopping' for prom at Trenton, Ga., City Hall where Rescue Prom has collected prom donations. Lackey's original prom dress disappeared from her aunt's home in a tornado. With their community hobbled by destruction, the prom had to be pushed back two weeks from April 30. The students got their prom, though, thanks to the free dresses from Rescue Prom, and free hairdos and makeup from shops in Chattanooga, just across the state line in Tennessee.

All pics great EXCEPT for the rifle in the mud photo. It looks as if the young man is more worried about getting his clean, delicate hands dirty than keeping the muzzle of his rfle out of the mud. A Marine DI would have him drinking the mud. Hopefully he stays with the Navy-probably a pilot.

The National Debt Clock, which displays the current United States gross national debt and each American family's share, hangs on a wall next to an office for the Internal Revenue Service near Times Square, in New York, May 16, 2011. The Treasury Department said the nation had hit its $14.294 trillion debt limit -- a milestone that has little practical impact beyond injecting a note of urgency into the debate over taxes and spending that has dominated Washington this year.

Floodwater is seen inside a building Monday, May 9, 2011, in Memphis, Tenn. Memphis residents are waiting for the Mississippi River to reach its peak expected as early as Monday night as the river rises near its highest level ever in Memphis, flooding pockets of low-lying neighborhoods.

Photographer describes covering the floods in Memphis

Associated Press photographer Jeff Roberson said about making this picture:

I’ve been covering floods for The Associated Press for nearly 20 years, and I’ve spent the last two weeks following the latest one down the Mississippi River. You’re looking at one of the latest stops in my journey, a building in Memphis with two signs outside: “Peaches Bar” and “For rent.” I took this picture through a window — really, the hole where a window used to be — while standing in thigh-deep water. The routine was pretty typical for flood coverage: Make sure my tetanus shot is up to date (it is), grab the go pack I keep in the attic, drive to the edge of the water, put on chest waders and walk into the floodwaters, very slowly, being careful not to step into a manhole or off the end of a submerged ledge. If you can call any of that typical.

In this Tuesday May 3, 2011 picture, Kim Thompson exhales vapor from her e-cigarette outside her new business called "The Vaporium" in Lakewood, Wash. Thompson, a 20-year smoker, opened the business selling electronic cigarettes or personal vaporizers as an alternative to traditional cigarettes in January and says the business is doing well. The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department is considering a ban on battery-powered electronic cigarettes that deliver nicotine without smoking. The News Tribune reports that regulations proposed Wednesday, May 4, 2011 would ban e-smoking — or "vaping" — in the same public places where the use of real cigarettes and cigars are prohibited by state law. King County adopted such a ban in January.

Do you have experience with e-smoking or "vaping?" How do you think its impact on public spaces compares to conventional smoking?

I've smoked E-cigs... They are VERY MUCH like regular cigs in the way the the smoker likes...And NOTHING like regular cigs in the way the NON-Smoker dislikes... In other words... the smoker gets the nicotine, and the feeling as if he/she is ACTUALLY smoking...The vapor feels like smoke, you get the …

This photo ca. 1898 courtesy of the Library of Congress in Washington, DC shows Geronimo (Guiyatle) by F.A. Reinhart, Omaha. Native American leaders in the United States expressed outrage on May 4, 2011 that the name of legendary Apache warrior Geronimo was used as a military codename during the commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden. "To associate a native warrior with bin Laden is not an accurate reflection of history, and it undermines the military service of native people," said a statement by Jefferson Keel, president of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI). Geronimo, an Apache chief who lived from 1829 to 1909, was a famed warrior who fought in what is now the US state of New Mexico, battling US and Mexican authorities as the American West was being settled. Keel said using the name of Geronimo during last weekend's US special forces operation against bin Laden in Pakistan was an affront to native peoples because it linked them to one of the most reviled enemies of the United States.

This picture provided by Time magazine shows the cover of a special issue of the magazine on the death of Osama bin Laden, to hit newsstands on Thursday, May 5, 2011. The cover image features a red “X” over bin Laden’s face, and the magazine says it is the fourth cover in Time’s history to feature the red “X.” Other covers showed Adolf Hitler on May 7, 1945, Saddam Hussein on April 21, 2003, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi on June 19, 2006.

The Osama bin Laden cover was commissioned and painted in 2002.  Here's a link to all four red x covers.

Osama bin Laden's death resonates at Arlington Cemetery

Photographer Evan Vucci of the Associated Press was going to a funeral in Arlington National Cemetery when he saw another scene to photograph. Here he describes what he found:

Fighting back tears, former Marine Adam Furr looked at me and said, “It doesn’t seem like it’s in vain anymore.”  I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve photographed burials at Arlington since the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  But I’ll always remember today.  Twenty minutes before I was to photograph the burial of Marine Sgt. Sean Callahan, I saw Furr kneeling by the grave of Lt. Col. Kevin Michael Shea and relaying, to his fallen friend, the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed. When Furr heard the news he knew that a visit to Arlington was in order, to let an old friend know.
