Fighting in World War I ended when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Armistice Day, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, was changed in June, 1954, when November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Former President George W. Bush gives a Veteran's Day address, Nov. 11, 2010, at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

    From the Associated Press

DAYTON, Ohio — Former president George W. Bush said Thursday he's enjoying being away from politics and won't get involved in current debates about his successor or Washington.

"I will not be criticizing President (Barack) Obama," Bush told a Veterans Day tribute audience. "As a matter of fact, we wish him well. We're all Americans, and we want to succeed."

He said he didn't miss Washington, "all the politics, all the name calling ... the spitballs."

But he told some 1,500 people, many of them veterans, at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in southwest Ohio that he does miss serving as commander in chief.

With interviews and speeches, Bush has been vigorously promoting his newly released memoir "Decision Points. He focused his speech Thursday on parts of the book dealing with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the support and inspiration he drew from wounded warriors, families of those killed during his presidency, and the military.

Reflecting on several crucial decision points during his time in the Oval Office, former President George W. Bush says I'm gonna be dead when they finally figure it out. And I'm comfortable knowing that I gave it my all.

ddddc, I hate to say it but yes. Politicians are all about keeping their jobs and nothing about really working for the people who elected them. It's all about the money. It should be one term and out on every political job. And everybody has to serve.

    Remembering those who served

    By Phaedra Singelis, NBC News

Thousands of items have been left at the Vietnam Memorial in D.C since it was built in 1982. The items are collected and then transferred to the NPS Museum and Resource Center, which catalogs and stores all items except perishable organic matter, like flowers. They have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute in past years.

Names are still being added - six were added last year. You can find names, or browse on the wall's website. You can donate to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial fund here, and find out more about the ceremony they will be holding today.

Have you been to this memorial in D.C.? Do you have a Vietnam memorial in your city?

Vietnam 1969 - We vets may get together for a beer or two on Veterans Day, but the thoughts are of the guys who can't be there with us. I don't need a parade or alot of whoop-a-la to help me take pride in my service.

I've seen a lot of photos out of Afghanistan but these caught my eye and left me wanting to see more. I want to thank all the men and women who have served and continue to serve their country in the armed forces, on this Veteran's Day eve.

It would really make my day if they would drop about 500 bunker buster bombs on the caves where the Taliban cowards and the other vermin are hunkering down.  These savages still live in the dark ages and to kill them all would be the greatest thing that ever happened in this world.
