A flock of 500 sheep burned by a wildfire in Darnius near La Junquera, close to the Spanish-French border, on July 23, 2012.

At least four people are dead and many more are left injured as wildfires sweep through popular tourist spots on the coast of Spain. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The Associated Press reports — A French man and one of his three children died after they jumped along with his wife off a 164-foot cliff into the sea to flee a raging wildfire that forced them out of their car just as they were about to cross the Spanish border into France at the end of their vacation, officials said Monday.

Two other people were also killed by the weekend fires in northeastern Spain that have burned 35 square miles.

The French mother and two children survived, as did about 150 more mostly French tourists who had to abandon their cars Sunday evening because of the wildfire, heading on foot down steep hillsides toward the beach in the border town of Portbou, said Deputy Mayor Elisabet Cortaba. Many suffered injuries ranging from broken bones to burns. Read the full story.

Acquaintances of World War Two veteran Valentin Markozov, 92, mourn during his funeral ceremony at the central cemetery of Krymsk on July 9, 2012.

The Associated Press reports from Krymsk, Russia — Authorities failed to properly warn residents in the Black Sea region of floods that killed at least 171 people and left others scrambling for safety, Russia's emergencies minister acknowledged Monday, adding to public outrage fueled by widespread mistrust of the government.

'Wave of water': Torrential rains kill dozens in Russia

Monday has been declared a national day of mourning in Russia. Families of the flood victims were beginning to bury the dead in the hard-hit town of Krymsk, where torrential rain and flooding turned streets into swirling muddy rivers, inundated thousands of homes and forced people to flee from their beds in the middle of the night. Nearly 19,000 people have lost all their belongings. Read the full story.

Wind, rain and mud greet revelers on summer solstice at Stonehenge

A man playing an accordion beneath a costume of torn fabrics and a child leave Stonehenge during the summer solstice after 4:52 am BST on June 21, 2012.

Rain-sodden crowds welcomed a spectacularly soggy summer solstice at Stonehenge in true British fashion Thursday: With stoicism and wit. But through the wind and rain, drummers inside the ancient stone circle kept up their thumping rhythm, new age pagans continued with their chaotic dance, and visitors didn't lose their sense of humor.

Stonehenge is a celebrated venue of festivities during the summer solstice - the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere - attracting thousands of revelers, spiritualists and tourists. Druids, a pagan religious order dating back to Celtic Britain, believe Stonehenge was a center of spiritualism more than 2,000 years ago.

London wakes to one of its legendary fogs

"When one of the thick, yellowish compounds known as a "pea-soup" fog falls on London it makes day darker than the darkest night; it arrests all traffic, obliterates all landmarks, and, as Mrs. Browning says, it looks 'as if a sponge had wiped out London.' The city is transformed into ghostland." The New York Times, December 29, 1889.

The fog was indeed thick as I crossed the Thames on my way into work in London this morning. In its wake, thank goodness, have come bright blue skies and city's warmest day of the year so far, with temperatures expected to reach into the high sixties.

Just a few weeks ago Europe was going through a bitter winter, which seemed to have no end in sight. Now, the first signs of spring are popping up with blooming crocuses, and there are still three weeks left before the official start of spring.

We have experienced a mild winter so far in the New York City area, and while the lack of snow is a little disappointing, it does not keep me from eagerly anticipating the warmer weather.

Are you looking forward to the spring? Still want more winter? Take a look at some of the best winter images this season in our slideshow:

Police rescue man who claimed he spent 2 months in snowed-in car

    Scanpix Sweden / Reuters

A snowed-in car is seen in the woods north of Umea in northern Sweden, Feb. 18. A middle-aged Swedish man was found alive in the car on Friday after sitting in it for the past two months, with only ice and snow to keep him alive, according to local police.

Umea University Hospital, where the man is recovering after being rescued by police and a rescue team, said in a statement he was doing well considering the circumstances.

Doctors at the hospital said humans would normally be able to survive for about four weeks without food. Besides eating snow, the man probably survived by going into a dormant-like state, physician Stefan Branth told Vasterbottens-Kuriren.

Romania digs out from 15 feet of snow

Daniel Mihailescu / AFP - Getty Images

A woman shovels the snow from the entrance of her house in Glodeanu Silistea village, 100km east of Bucharest on Feb. 14. Romania may halt electricity exports and limit supplies to industrial consumers in a bid to meet rising household demand due to freezing temperatures, the government said today.

The Associated Press reports: Snow as deep as 15 feet (4.5 meters) isolated areas in Romania, Moldova and Albania on Tuesday and turned a power plant in Kosovo into a park of dazzling ice sculptures.

In a winter harsher than many can remember, energy workers struggled mightily Tuesday to break the ice that has encapsulated Kosovo's main power station in Obilic. Steam from the plant's vents coated its pipes and buildings with ice and snow, turning them into unworldly, unrecognizable objects of art.

Since the end of January, Eastern Europe has been pummeled by a record-breaking cold snap and the heaviest snowfalls in recent memory.
