Spanish town short of brides buses gals in from city

    Alberto Di Lolli / AP

Bernardo, 77, left, talks to a young woman during a meeting between men and women in the village of Candeleda, Spain, April 21. Sixty-eight women were bused in to the village to meet with the local men with the hope that some will form relationships and settle in the village, where the main population is male.

    Alberto Di Lolli / AP

A group of women arrive in a bus before a meeting between men and women in Candeleda, Spain.

Inspired by a Hollywood western, a Spanish dating association is trying to slow a population drain from the country's beleaguered central villages, introducing bachelors to women bused in from the big city of Madrid with hopes of ending a bride shortage.

Candeleda, a town of 6,000 on the banks of the picturesque Lobera River, hosted a weekend fiesta to welcome 68 women for a meet-and-greet with the village's single men. Ancient cave paintings show Candeleda has been inhabited for some 5,000 years, and resident Jose Miguel, 67, said he would hate to see its population dwindle after such a long history.

Indian 'prostitute village' marries girls to end flesh trade

    Amit Dave / Reuters

Boys from the Saraniya community wearing turbans sit next to their sisters before the start of their engagement ceremony at Vadia village in the western Indian state of Gujarat March 11. The Vadia village in western India hosted a mass wedding and engagement ceremony of 21 girls on Sunday aimed at breaking a tradition of prostitution which has for centuries exploited women of a poor, marginalised and once nomadic community in the region.

    Amit Dave / Reuters

A veiled girl from the Saraniya community waits for her engagement ceremony to start at Vadia village in the western Indian state of Gujarat, March 11.

Hundreds of guests from surrounding villages and government officials gathered at the colorful event, which saw eight couples married and 13 others engaged in a huge marquee in Wadia village, 115 km (70 miles) west of Palanpur city in India's Gujarat state.

"Prostitution is a tradition which this community adopted for ages and it has been very normal for them. They did not think they were doing anything wrong. But it is uncivilized, indecent," said Vijay Bhatt, development officer for Banaskantha district, which Wadia village is part of.

"By marrying and engaging these girls we have been able to break this culture. Once a girl is married, she is out of the profession. Once she is even engaged, she is out of this nexus."

Fellow readers, you might think and you have mentioned that this is terrible, they are children and they look all sad. It is indeed terrible, outright preposterous but it is not. However, put yourself on the other side and visualise the horror of child prostitution, trafficking, child abuse and sex  …

India's wedding season peaks from late October to early December as couples choose to wed in these auspicious months, Getty Images reports. Many musicians are lured to Delhi from neighboring states to work for the popular traditional brass bands that play during weddings. The twenty musicians of the Rajan Band are paid the equivalent of $8 a day, working long hours to fulfil demand, whilst the band owner charges clients the equivalent of $520 per wedding.

Canadian couple poses for photo as their wedding lodge burns down

There's some dark humor to appreciate in this image as the couple makes the most of an unexpected change of venue. Of course, the loss of a major employer is no laughing matter for people who live in the area:

As the second largest employer in Queens County, the immediate loss of 100 jobs is a blow to economy, Mayor John Leefe said.

"They always say hope for the best and plan for the worst," Leefe said. "White Point is a major employer in the community and this has hit its employees so hard, not just from a work perspective but for those people who work there, this is part of their lives. The emotions of course are running high. They're really grieving over the loss of a place that was very near and dear to so many people's hearts."

I agree! I love their attitude and they they valued the wedding vows, not the material possessions. I actually really like this picture. At least they had a memorable day and a unique backdrop. I do hope though that the resort's insurance reimburses them for their lost gifts. For better or worse, eh …

Vegas 11/11/11 weddings: As day turns to night, the frenzy continues

Even as night fell, the pace of weddings held in Las Vegas today didn't let up. In the video below by msnbc.com's David Friedman, watch wave upon wave of wedding parties arrive and leave the Graceland Wedding Chapel as day turned to night using time lapse photography. The chapel, which opened in the 1950s, performed more than a hundred wedding ceremonies today.

For some couples, they considered the day lucky, or it held special meaning from their past. For others, getting married today was just plain practical. When Ryan and Christina Davis were asked why they chose 11/11/11 to get married, Christina replied, "So he wouldn't forget our anniversary."

    Jim Seida / msnbc.com

The south Florida couple were one of thousands of marriages in Las Vegas today and they are shown above, fifth and sixth from left, surrounded by friends and family as they pose for photos in front of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign at the far southern end of the Las Vegas strip on Friday night.
