Scores of firefighters are fighting a runaway veld fire that swept through the entire Boland region in the Western Cape, according to SABC News. Veld fires are fires that occur in the open countryside away from urban areas. Veld comes from the Afrikaans word for field.

Burned and charred trees are seen after a bush fire swept through the area in Margaret River, Australia, on November 24. Over 200 residents from Prevelly have gathered on a beach near to Margaret River's mouth as the blaze forced them from their houses. The bushfire has already destroyed over 1000 hectares north of Margaret River. According to the local Department of Conservation several homes have been destroyed.

ROGUE RIVER, Ore. — An Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman says a fast-moving wildfire has raced across 300 acres of grassland in southern Oregon near Rogue River, threatening some homes and briefly closing northbound lanes of Interstate 5. Five helicopters and two air tankers dropped water on the blaze before darkness fell Thursday. Spokesman Kevin Weeks says ground crews will be fighting the North River Road Fire overnight.
