Heavy rain in central China makes crossing the street a tricky proposition

A woman crosses a flooded street using a row of tables in Wuhan, a city in central China's Hubei province, on May 29, 2012. China is hit by big summer rainfalls every year, as heavy downpours across large swathes of the country trigger flooding, landslides and other rain-related disasters.

While this doesn't look too comfortable, it looks like a pretty good way to save money on hotel costs. If this option was offered at colleges and universities in the United States for parents who are helping to move their kiddos into school, would you or your parents do it, or would the reservation at the inn a few miles from campus be kept? I have to say I think I'd do it in an effort to relive a bit of the camaraderie of dorm life from my college days, but I am just about positive my husband would not be on board with that plan.

    Chinese inventor tests miniature submarine

    By Rich Shulman

I guess you have to appreciate his enterprise, but what are the odds this thing is safe?

    Jason Lee / Reuters

A worker polishes the surface of an unfinished miniature submarine at a workshop of Zhang Wuyi, a local farmer who is interested in scientific inventions, in Qingling village, on the outskirts of Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province Aug. 29. Zhang has successfully tested his self-made miniature submarine "Shuguang Hao", which is 12 feet long, 6 feet high, has a maximum diving depth of 65 feet, can travel at a speed of 20 km per hour for 10 hours underwater and is shaped as a dolphin. "I hope to sell my submarine as a civil product with the price of about 100,000 yuan ($15,670) after safety tests, and a merchant has decided to order one in this month", Zhang said.

Assistants working for Zhang Wuyi, a local farmer who is interested in scientific inventions, put an oxygen tank into his self-made miniature submarine "Shuguang Hao" before Zhang carries out a safety test on it at Moshui Lake in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province August 29.

Desperate protest against demolition of homes in Wuhan, China

By David R Arnott, NBC News

Disputes over land are increasingly common in China. On Wednesday, an operation to demolish illegally built shelters on a former dump site in the city of Wuhan led to an impassioned protest by one woman. EPA reports that the city plans to demolish illegal buildings at over 200 sites this month.

Soaring property prices are a major source of official and consumer concern in China with apartment costs rising out of the reach of many people and threatening to spark social unrest, AFP reports.

A surreal scene plays out amid China's floodwaters

I asked Reuters for the story behind these photos, and their Beijing bureau kindly supplied more information:

These students are from Wuhan University. They just had their graduation ceremony, then came to Donghu Lake in their robes for a special graduation photo.

Wuhan is an inland city, but heavy rainfall last Saturday broke down the city: roads were submerged, cars were stranded, lots of people were trapped and couldn't go home [See Saturday's images on PhotoBlog].

So after a while people online started to spread a sarcasm: "If you love him/her, take him/her to Wuhan to see the sea."

Gay couples kiss during their ceremonial 'wedding' as they try to raise awareness of the issue of homosexual marriage, in Wuhan, in central China's Hubei province on March 8. Homosexuality was considered a mental disorder in China until 2001. Today, gays face crushing social and family pressure and many remain in the closet as a result, despite gradual steps towards greater acceptance.

Thousands of passengers carrying their belongings walking out of a railway station as they return to work after the Lunar New Year holidays in Wuhan, central China's Hubei province on Feb. 9. The Lunar New Year holiday is the most important annual celebration in China, when the nation largely shuts down as families gather together for reunions and feasts. More than 2.5 billion passenger trips by air, rail, bus or sea will be taken around the holiday, the government says, as China's army of migrant workers, business people and students return home for the festivities.
